“All the people around the world working for justice and sustainability for their communities”
bio
I come from working families who are active in movements for justice and sustainability and I have been joined by my children in that work. I worked for the Institute for Community Economics supporting the development of community land trusts serving low income and people of color communities nationally. Next I helped found and ran the Cooperative Development Institute, the CDI Loan Fund, and Cooperative Life (an association of cooperatives in the Northeast), providing technical assistance and financing to support the development of group-based enterprises across the Northeast in dozens of industry sectors, including energy. Next I helped found and ran Co-op Power, a decentralized network of community energy cooperatives in the Northern US, building community ownership of sustainable and equitable clean energy. Together we
built 4.5 MW of community owned solar, supported development of a dozen new enterprises (including PV Squared, Northeast Biodiesel and Energia), created new jobs and provided job training, job placement, and career development support for hundreds of low income people. Next helped found and ran the People's Solar Energy Fund, providing funding and financing for EJ community-led and owned solar nationally. I recently helped found the Green Energy Justice Cooperative in partnership with Blacks In Green (BIG) to support African American Communities to build and own solar that can generate bill savings, jobs, community wealth, and political and economic power. I am partnering with others to create systems where low income and people of color communities own the energy generation, jobs, and all else they depend on.
