I’m Fraser, Product Manager for HeroX.


I’m a big fan of robots, but building robots is hard.

 

You need a lot of tools, you get grease on your hands. There’s reading involved.

Robots are here to do hard work right? So I believe building robots is a job for robots.

I’m challenging all you robot builders to solve this problem.

I want to see a robot copy itself from raw materials. Then those two robots get together and make a third robot, and so on, and so on.

Crafting a robot capable of making another robot is a difficult task. I’m game to make it worth your while.

I’m offering a crisp Canadian $100 bill to the first one across the finish line.


This won’t necessarily be enough money to encourage robot creators around the globe, despite the massive bragging rights that go along with it.

And maybe you’re watching this thinking “Hey, I love robots too! Yet I have no idea how to build them”.

 

And so it’s also you I’m calling upon. You and all other future thinking people to join me and pledge to make this a reality.

Let’s make an X-Prize, but for robots.

Let’s pool our resources, gather together a prize to get the robot makers’ attention.

No money will exchange hands, this is just a pledge, a promise, an affirmation.

Once we’ve gathered $100,000 in pledges, we’ll start the competition.

Robot builders can then race to build the replicating robot machine.

Whoever builds it first gets the money, and human beings never have to build another robot again.

I’ve written rules that I think make sense, so we don’t get Berserkers or Terminators and it’s clear what people need to create to win.

But I’m not perfect, and so one rule I’ve add is that you can contribute, to help make better rules.

How Can You Win the Challenge?

Build a robot, capable of building a second robot out of raw materials. And then those two robots need to work together to craft a third robot out of raw materials.

And when I say raw materials, I'm talking about powdered plastic, copper wire, graphite, and a block of steel. Nothing preformed at all. It should be able to make its own motors, transistors, etc.

The robot must be capable of converting the raw material into robot parts, and then assembling the robot parts into a finished, functional robot.

Ideally, it should even plug itself into power.

Gene Hacker has proposed some additional criteria. Should it be totally autonomous or human controlled? What environment can it build in? Should it be able to make its own transistors? Motors?

What metrics will you use to judge the winners?

The robot which can complete the task fastest will be the winner.

What does a competitor need to submit in order for their submission to be judged?

A competitor needs to provide a video that shows the robot successfully building and assembling another robot, which can then build and assemble a third robot.

If multiple people submit videos, then we will hold a live race and let the robots compete against each other to complete themselves.
