Watsonville Solar City Now! seeks to support municipal objectives and increase reliability and resilience through local power generation. The project proposed by the Coalition envisions a community-owned network of ten 5 megawatt solar plus battery microgrids that could provide 100% of the city’s current residential electricity demand, transforming it into a “Solar City.” Renewable energy systems, owned and operated by the communities in which they are located, can provide access to solar technology, electricity to disadvantaged households and revenues to support a sustainable guaranteed income fund from which qualifying low-income families will receive a monthly check. The project could be a model for urban solarization that does not rely on individual solar rooftops.
