Identify new materials and new designs for heliostat support and drive structures that reduce the amount of material used or that explore use of less expensive materials without negatively impacting tracking accuracy, optical efficiency and structural integrity. New designs should be inexpensive and lightweight but must be able to withstand various wind conditions while maintaining tracking accuracy. Structures should be designed to maintain tracking accuracy (total optical error <3 mrad) at wind speeds of 30 mph winds and survive higher wind speeds of 85 mph. The designs should adhere to ASCE 7-05, section 6.
