Solar cells, modules, and systems commonly have a series connection. A leaf, bird droppings, or other shading of one cell may significantly limit the system performance. Consider a 20% shadow on one cell that does not trigger the bypass diode in the module. A 1000 volt inverter string may have 28 panels and supply 9 kW's. The 20% shadow on one cell may result in 1.8 kW's of lost power even though only 1 watt is impacted on the solar cell.
