Emerging Marine Clean Energy Systems (EMCES)

Our team has been working to develop an autonomous floating source of energy which is based hybrid solar-nuclear source of energy. The thermal cycle is a combined Rankine-Brayton cycle that generates hydrogen using the heat wasted from the power cycles. The hydrogen will be used by surface hydrogen-based vessels. The main goal of our project is to characterize and evaluate the challenges for the first prototype of this floating source of energy. For the nuclear part, our computational analysis will include the fission material but on the experimental part, we will perform surrogate modeling and just use a source of heat to simulate the heat generated by the loop. The team has already designed and built a fully solar-based floating source of energy. Our goal is to extend the work and develop an autonomous device to communicate with other vessels and optimize the distribution of power and hydrogen generation.
