Liwei Zhou's team

Located in Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex area, our team is based from the University of Texas at Arlington, Department of Electrical Engineering, with sufficient industry and academia supports and resources. The team is led by Prof. Liwei Zhou who has been majored in power electronics and renewable energy systems for more than 10 years.

Our team designs a high efficiency and high power density solar inverter to efficiently deliver the energy from the solar panel to the AC grid or load side. We develops the advanced software control method and hardware circuit to deal with the typical leakage current issue without using the bulky transformer which saves 20%-30% of the hardware cost. Also, we proposes an optimization-based power decoupling method to mitigate the typical second-pulsation on DC bus of the single-phase solar inverter which reduces the capacitor cost by 6 times and results in a volume reduction of 30%. Thus, the power density and efficiency of the solar inverter can be improved by 30% and 4%. The cost can be reduced by 40%. The proposed solar inverter is rated with 8-10kW (can be scaled-up). The potential for commercialization is huge due to the significant power density, cost and efficiency improvements compared with the existing technologies.
