Overview

This challenge is all about decentralized apps, or dapps.  Help us gather great ideas for the helpful dapps that you wish existed!

Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange platform, knows that sometimes a community in need isn’t able to express all the ways it can be helped. However, in this challenge, Coinbase wants you to help bridge that gap by sharing your boldest ideas for dapps that could help build community. Dapp development is poised to become widespread in the near future, so your ideas could have a positive effect on the direction this industry takes!

The challenge is simple: in 250 words or less, give us your idea for the dapp Coinbase should help develop and tell us about how it will help a community in need.

Guidelines

Dapps have all the functionality of apps, but they also have the added benefits of the blockchain technology upon which they are based. These benefits include improved security against cyber attacks, control over your own data, transparency into how the dapps operate, and the ability to perform cryptocurrency transactions.

Dapps also offer their users unprecedented direct access to certain services. For example, dapps could help those who can’t readily open a bank account to perform financial transactions, or could connect developing communities to an international insurance fund.

Right now, many dapps fall into one or more of these categories:

  • Financial services
  • Gaming
  • Blogging and social media
  • Contracts and business services
  • Non-profit services

But what is your idea for a dapp that can help a community in need? Can you think of something outside-the-box? Or perhaps you have an idea for a game-changing app within one of these categories? Either way, Coinbase will use the best ideas to help inspire and guide future dapp developers.

HeroX mini-challenges like this one are fast and furious. You have just a few weeks to get your submission in, so don’t wait to get started!

Prize

This challenge will recognize up to 5 winners. In addition to general glory and bragging rights, winners of this challenge will have their ideas promoted to the exclusive Coinbase challenge, Buidl Web3 With Coinbase Cloud. Note: participation directly in the Buidl Web3 With Coinbase Cloud is restricted to members of the Coinbase partner programmer community and those who have been invited.

Competitors in that challenge will be given the opportunity to build out any of the winning ideas and turn them into functioning prototypes. If your idea is used by a winning competitor, you both will win a bonus opportunity to meet with a Coinbase expert to discuss your ideas further and consider how the dapp could be developed further.

Multiple submissions are permitted, but participants may only submit up to 5 different ideas, with each idea being a separate submission. Any additional submissions will not be evaluated. Multiple submissions from the same participant are expected to be substantially different from one another, and duplicate submissions will be screened out. Participants may win more than one prize, at the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponso

Challenge Updates

Congratulations to the winners of the Gaps in Dapps Challenge!

Nov. 22, 2022, 10 a.m. PST by Shane Jenkins

Attention, Heroes!

It is our honor to announce the five winners of the Gaps in Dapps Challenge. We received a variety of fun, helpful, and out-of-the-box ideas in this challenge, which is exactly the kind of creativity we hoped to inspire. First, let's give a huge thank-you to everyone who submitted; please continue thinking about what services the world needs and keep an eye out for future opportunities to bring your ideas to life.

And now, for the challenge winners:

  • Rentable Room by Ben
This submission proposed creating reservable rooms (such as a conference room, karaoke room, call cabin, coworking office, etc.) that can be reserved by claiming or buying NFTs on-chain, free (gas-only) or for-fees as chosen by a controller or current holder.

  • eSports Leaderboard by Robertswww
Organized eSports competitions & professional gaming tournaments around the world need a safe, secure & reliable way to maintain & track high scores. Robert believes that the blockchain would be the ideal place to store the leaderboard results & offer proof of top scores.

  • IncorporatIng Dapps into the Construction Industry by IKTINOS Solutions team
Iktinos aims to incorporate smart contracts into the Construction Industry, providing new investment opportunities for fiat & crypto assets
Their idea connects crypto assets to the traditional economy and transforms construction finance by providing new funding sources. Institutional & retail investors could benefit from less risky profits, since the construction sector is often more stable.

  • Dapp'ing for Homeless by Persons RV2
Robert proposes a decentralized app that allows people to anonymously donate to homeless persons while being assured their donations are properly used.
A homeless person is given a gift card with a barcode. If a passerby scans/taps the card, they can donate an amount to the card. App settings control what goods or services the currency can be used to purchase. All parties remain anonymous.

  • Food COOP DAO by Ashley Cribb
Food deserts around the country need help with fundraising. This dapp will assist coops and others around the country in becoming a DAO to help raise funds to further their mission to feed the hungry. This can help them to create grocery stores and accept fiat and tokens as payment.

These five submissions will be shared with the community over at the Buidl Web3 with Coinbase Cloud challenge, hopefully inspiring those competitors to take these ideas to the next level. Perhaps in a few weeks, you will see one of these concepts become an actual prototype!

Once again, congratulations to our winners!
