Austin area civic-minded app developers and entrepreneurs are invited to compete in the City of Austin’s GigaTECHs Competition. The competition is part of a broader nationwide initiative, led by D.C-based U.S Ignite, to encourage next-generation Gigabit Internet applications that provide transformative public benefit. Competitors will have the opportunity to win $38,000 in prize money to seed and support the development of applications that focus on opportunities in local transportation, education, clean energy, health and safety (TECHs). The prize money is made possible by U.S Ignite and the City of Austin’s Communications and Technology Management Department.

GigaTECHs App Competition Winners Announcement - Press Conference

Sept. 20, 2017, 10 p.m. PDT
The City will held a news conference from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the City Hall conference room to answer questions about the competition and its winners. Winners also shared how this opportunity and this experience changed their lives. Representatives from both winning teams, as well as City staff from Communications Technology Management department, will be available for questions.

Austin selects GigaTECHs App Challenge Finalists - GCN

With funding from U.S. Ignite’s Smart Gigabit Cities program, Austin, Texas, is looking for next-generation applications that can provide the most benefit to residents. The city’s GigaTECHs App Competition has narrowed down the number of applications to 11 projects dealing with local transportation, education, clean energy, health and safety (TECHs). The 11 finalists will present their projects to a panel of city employees and community members on Aug. 31. After the presentations, the judges will pick two winners who will split $38,000, with payments coming in two installments. The Austin winners will participate in the U.S Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities program.....
