To start, astronauts will take cursory looks at the soil using a UV lamp--checking for strange or noteworthy coloration differences. Using this data, the astronauts then collect a large array of soil samples, testing them for substances like nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus--elements that are necessary for the growth of vegetation. Based on their readings, the astronauts then mark areas of fertility and areas of toxicity with mini flags. At the end, they review the areas and log their findings with their wrist communicators.
