A contestant asked us whether the aim of this competition is to create an app that helps nonprofit organizations OR to come up with an idea that helps humanity in general. We answered:
Great question! The short answer is: you are aiming to solve an issue affecting humanity (an issue of your choice), with the caveat that it should be capable of using our CORE open source software. There is no need to choose a particular nonprofit organization and it does not necessarily need to be an 'app'. It can be virtually any solution you think of, aimed at solving any humanitarian issue you can think of.
