Dr. Christopher R. Meyer has served as the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at California State University (CSU), Fresno since July 2017. Prior to this, he was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSU Fullerton, serving as Chair of the department from 2010 - 2015. His NSF funded lab focused on the regulation of carbon metabolism and the generation of biodegradable and renewable carbon sources using techniques from plant metabolic biochemistry, enzymology, molecular biology, and agricultural biotechnology. He is a past member of a GRE Committee and the national American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training which leads discussions on curriculum innovation and certification of programs. He also served on the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Minority Affairs Committee (MAC). He currently serves on the Strategic Planning Committee for CSU BIOTECH https://www.calstate.edu/impact-of-the-csu/research/csubiotech/. At Fresno State, he has led an effort to introduce Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) into the curriculum. He also secured major funding from NSF with his colleagues at Fresno State, CSU Bakersfield, and CSU Stanislaus to catalyze the innovation of effective teaching pedagogies in gateway chemistry and mathematics courses. He is a coPI on an NSF AGEP award with UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, and CSU Channel Islands, an alliance to Increase Underrepresented Minority Faculty in STEM. He helps lead two Department of Education grants focused on enhancing student success in STEM/STEAM. He also serves as the PI on a Partnerships for Adult Student Success (PALs) grant for STEM majors funded by the APLU. He is also engaged in other collaborative grants with UC Davis and UC Riverside as well as the Fresno-Merced Future of Food (F3) Innovation grant from the Department of Commerce in partnership with colleagues in LCOE and JCAST and other stakeholders. He has twice served as a rotating Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF), in BIO Molecular and Cellular Bioscience (MCB, 2008-09) and the Division of Biological Infrastructure (DBI, 2015-17). He earned a BA degree in Chemistry (Summa cum laud) from California State University, Chico and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside. He served as a postdoctoral scholar and a Visiting Research Assistant Professor at Michigan State University prior to joining the CSU.
