bio
I am an experienced executive with over 25 years consulting on various aspects of commercialization. After various roles at MIT, NASA, and Intel, I started my own firm in 2001 to facilitate R&D business development between the US government and private industry with clientele including Sharp Technology Ventures, P&G, Deloitte, U.S. DoD, NASA, several Manufacturing Extension Partnerships (OR, WA, MI, TN, NY, RI), several smaller firms, various research hospitals and the National Technology Transfer Center. Recently, I was the founder and west coast lead for a 3 year US Department of Commerce program to solve small manufacturers challenges through engagement with federally funded capabilities. I have served as a connector for American Made Prizes and won the connector award in 2021. I have leveraged my knowledge of technology, business processes, and relationships to establish dozens of strategic R&D partnerships with projects spanning alternative energy to armored glass and software to sand flies. This includes technical partnerships with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, USDA, DHS, NASA, NIST, and DoE. My work on technology commercialization and his tireless efforts with the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) earned the 2011 Outstanding Service Award from the FLC, where I am a long time member of the programming committee. My other government related work includes serving as a NSF SBIR reviewer, a DOE NREL Connector, and a NSF I-Corps industrial mentor. I've reviewed dozens of commercialization plans, obtained state of Maryland funding to test an anti-nausea product, and was the chief author of the proposal that funded an Oregon Biology Signature Research Center (OTRADI). My clients have used his assistance to form other partnerships and grant funding from local and national groups, including DoE, USDA, DoD, and NSF Phase 1 SBIRs. Prior to forming my firm, I served as Vice President, Strategic Planning at CenterSpan (NASDAQ: CSCC), an early social communication and marketing platform. At Intel Corporation, I managed business development for Internet communication technologies, seeking outside (and internal) partners to commercialize Intel Labs’ products. I have founded several firms, including Scribe-X and RUTE Foundations. I am a past member of the Licensing Executives Society, an adjunct professor at Portland State University, an NSF SBIR phase 2 reviewer, have served on the advisory board of several firms (Oregon, Inc., Innovation Assets Group, Kerstech, and RUTE Foundations) and is on the US Small Business Association Invention, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Advisory Committee. I speak regularly on Open Innovation and Technology Commercialization. I graduated with a Physics degree from the University of Michigan and have an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
