Dr. Scott (Faculty advisor)
Carbondale, Illinois, United States
“The mystery of life on this planet. The beauty in simple design and solutions is my guiding star.”
bio
Dr. Scott has been energized by opportunities to combine discovery/fundamental science with the power of creative imagination to form elegant, applied solutions. The incentive to seek solutions can spring from altruistic or profit oriented reasons; for some it is one or the other, not both. His personal interest in the outdoors and the natural world motivates him to combine these incentives. Dr. Scott’s specialty is in culturing extreme microorganisms which often leads to pondering the origins of life on earth. At the same time, the biochemistry ‘secrets’ possessed by microorganisms in extreme environments have founded multibillion dollar industries that have and will continue to shape our world. Pollution, resource limitations, and climate change are complex multifaceted problems. He seeks to build the elegant, applied, and creative solutions needed to solve these challenges. Dr. Hamilton-Brehm oversees exploratory research using OHD liquor, applies for financial opportunities through grants/awards/business contacts, and scientific outreach. Currently he is spearheading the application of OHD as a biostimulant using feedstocks such as algae, yeast, and other waste biomasses.
