“The opportunity to solve problems to help others while creating unique collaborations.”
bio
Judith Underwood is the CEO and Co-Founder of BLUE Institute Labs the home of the BLUE Incubator, and spearheading a collaborative project, "BLUE" for a 9+ acre waterfront open innovation and business incubation campus on Boston Harbor in the gateway City of Chelsea, a climate justice community. She believes strongly in "innovation through collaboration,” and has 20+ years of scientific development & technology transfer work at research and educational institutions including MIT, the United Nations, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. Judith is the first female in Massachusetts to start a solar company (and only the second female in the nation). She has taught at all levels, and is particularly keen on addressing the lack of funding to support entrepreneurs - particularly startups bringing in women, veterans and people of color to the burgeoning Blue Economy. In 2016 she founded the Blue Institute, Inc. a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to climate problem solving with an interdisciplinary lens in education, entrepreneurship, culture, and advocacy. The following year Judith and colleagues founded the BLUE Institute Labs, a public benefit corporation to scale BlueTech and ClimateTech startups and to create an innovation center that would bring together startups and students with innovators from industry, academia, NGOS, and government agencies. Judith has an M.A. from NYU, a B.A. from the UMass Boston, graduate work in Environmental Studies from Antioch, and is an MBA candidate at UMass Lowell. Judith lives on Cape Cod with her two children, their dog Boston and cat Basil, where she serves her town as a Water & Wastewater Commissioner.
