“I like to develop better ways of helping people change problem behaviors.”
bio
My research is developing better ways of helping people change behavior. My recent projects include: 1) a “just-in-time” adaptive smartphone intervention to reduce drinking among adults experiencing homelessness; 2) development and implementation of communication skills training for US Army operational units; 3) an online vocational training program for veterans with justice involvement; and 4) development of more effective substance use interventions for adolescents, young adults, and people with developmental disabilities. I also serve as the Steering Committee Chair for the HEALing Communities Study, which is developing a national model to address the opioid crisis. My publications include more than 120 articles and five books, including Treating Substance Abuse: Theory and Technique. In addition to research, I have conducted numerous trainings for criminal justice workers, counselors, and healthcare professionals, and served as a consultant to develop Internet and mobile interventions for a variety of health behaviors.
