Thomas Schmidt, AIA, LEED AP, is an award-winning Licensed Architect (USA & New Zealand), LEED Accredited Professional (AP), and Managing Director of Sepia Design Consultants Limited (www.sepiadesign.com), a hospitality consultancy firm based in Hong Kong. In addition to his contributions in the design of over 750 hotel projects and resort / tourism master plans throughout the world, his varied international hospitality design experience over the past 30 years has included temporary relocation to the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, where he gained basic proficiency in spoken Mandarin and knowledge of local business practices. Schmidt is an award-winning author / illustrator and is a Founding Member and Past Chapter Secretary of the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He is author / illustrator of the award-winning Bumbling Traveller Adventure Series (www.kakibubu.com) -- an educational travel graphic novel series with a focus on environmental conservation -- in addition to his interests in music composition and stand-up comedy. Relative to the space exploration / tourism industry, Mr. Schmidt was winner of the 2011 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Technical Feasibility and Elegance Award for his design of a lunar habitat / research base (www.sepiadesign.com); this included a presentation of his winning concept at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Space 2011 Conference & Exposition on 27-29 September 2011 in Long Beach, CA, USA, where he had the rare privilege of discussing his concept with astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Like many others, Mr. Schmidt's dream is to continue to contribute in making Space Tourism a reality.
