Dr. Valerie A. Shoup has over 34 years’ of experience in the facilities arena. As a professional engineer, she has performed engineering calculations on numerous projects. She has managed millions in capital and expense budgets on various projects for Texas Instruments and for UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Shoup is currently the owner of Heritage Institute of Sustainability (HIOS), a consulting firm in Dallas Texas. Dr. Shoup has acted as the Owners Representative for a project in East Texas where she worked with the city to apply for Grants from the USDA and Texas Water Development Board to rebuild an aging water treatment plant. Because of her extensive knowledge of energy systems, she identified $1.9M in principle forgiveness by ensuring the redesign incorporates energy efficiency features. Additionally, Dr. Shoup authored the Water Conservation Plan for the City of Kemp Texas which was submitted to the Texas Water Development Board. HIOS has completed third-party reviews for Terracon, Rees, Dallas Independent School District, Alan Plummer and Associates, City of Kemp, and Texas Pace Authority to name a few. A few selected career project highlights include: Instrumental in the Design Planning and Construction of Clements University Hospital at UT Southwestern and multiple other medical facilities including radiation oncology, bone marrow treatment, and imaging. Captured $4600K in savings by adopting a demand flow project for central plants to reduce energy consumption and by initiating an airflow reduction project for campus laboratories. Installed a 30 MW substation and distribution system along with Generation while reducing load through a $5M lighting retrofit resulting in $3.5M in annual savings. Earned several industry recognitions such as 2015 Texas Environmental Leadership Award for Outstanding Recycling Partnership, 2014 D Magazine’s Excellence in Healthcare Innovation Finalist, 2014 STARS Award for Excellence in Materials Management, and 2013 Working for Clean Air Award for Best Business Operations. Dr. Shoup led multiple special projects at UT Southwestern including the Implosion of University Hospital St. Paul. She is an excellent leader and communicator who has worked across industry segments including hospitals, universities, cities, businesses, and industries. She has presented papers internationally on various topics related to facilities. Her breadth of knowledge is second to none. Regarding working with Cities, Dr. Shoup helped the City of Kemp Texas create a sustainability plan for City expansion. She has worked with the Texas Trees Foundation on the planning of the Southwestern Medical District. She has assisted the City of Dallas with the Long-Term Waste Minimization plan and presented at Dallas City Hall. Regarding professional societies, Dr. Shoup is a member of ASHRAE, past president of NTAEE and a board member of NTAFE. She has served on numerous committees in all organizations.
