Hi Designers!
We are designing a challenge to incentivize innovators to develop technologies to assist New Yorkers as they age.
To effectively display the facts, we want you to design an infographic we can use on the challenge!
Here are the stats we need converted into an infographic:
NY'ers over 65
- In 2015, approximately 2.9 million New Yorkers were over the age of 65.
- By 2025, the number of New Yorkers over the age of 65 will rise by 26%, to 3,654,000 (or over 3.6 million New Yorkers).
- In 2015, 35% of New Yorkers age 65 and older required assistance with one or more Activity of Daily Life (ADL)
Caregiver to Elderly Ratio
- In 2015, it was projected that there would be 4.31 caregivers under the age of 65 to care for each adult over 65.
- In 2025, the ratio will be 3.38
- In 2040, the ratio will be 2.88
NY'ers over 85
- In 2025, over 435,000 New Yorkers will be 85 or older.
- By 2040, over 831,000 New Yorkers will be 85 or older, an increase over 80%.

"New Yorkers are aging. In 2015, approximately 2.9 million New Yorkers were over the age of 65. By 2025, that number will rise by 26%. For the oldest adults, the growth in population will continue dramatically beyond 2025. By 2040, over 831,000 New Yorkers will be 85 or older compared to over 458,000 projected in 2025, an increase of over 80%.
National disability prevalence rates have remained constant in recent decades. However, the approaching increase in the aging population means the number of adults living with a disability will increase dramatically. In 2015, 35% of New Yorkers age 65 and older required assistance with one or more ADLs.
Limitations with ADLs is a leading cause for admission to a nursing home or assisted living. When an individual needs assistance with three or more ADLs, they are three times more likely to enter a nursing home than someone without these limitations. In many instances, older adults with ADL limitations are able to live at home with help from family or friends. However, the number of available caregivers will decrease in coming years just as the need for their care increases. In 2015, it was projected that there would be 4.31 caregivers under the age of 65 to care for each adult over 65. In 2025, the ratio will be 3.38 and in 2040, it is projected at just 2.88. Caregivers today provide the majority of care for older adults living at home, often at the detriment to their own health and wellbeing. Fewer caregivers in the future will leave the growing number of older adults with ADL limitations with fewer options for care beyond nursing home placement and place a greater burden on the remaining caregivers.
Given the impending intersection of issues for older New Yorkers, we need alternative solutions that can assist individuals to remain more independent in their homes for as long as possible, delaying nursing home placement and easing the burden for caregivers."
The Prize
On November 1st, 2017, we will select one Grand Winner to receive $100 in cash.
The winning infographic will be used in our upcoming Challenge, and live until late 2018.
