Overview

The Problem

Develop a new air flow measurement apparatus to measure total system airflow across an indoor ducted furnace, heat pump, or central Air-Conditioning system. The apparatus should be easy to use by a trained technician with average total set up and testing time less than 20 minutes. The measured airflow should meet or exceed an accuracy of +/- 7% and the total first cost to the service contractors should be less than $100. The tool or system should be capable of measuring 0 to 2,000 cfm typical of residential HVAC air flow range and could be an actual physical device or an advanced algorithm using other available system information to accurately approximate a measured value.

Accurate Measurement devices are expensive and inherently intended for commercial systems and the process takes time. Such measurement devices are not suitable for Residential systems which is what we need.

The Challenge Breakthrough

The apparatus should be easy to use by a trained technician with average total set up and testing time less than 20 minutes. The measured airflow should meet or exceed an accuracy of +/- 7% and the total first cost to the service contractors should be less than $100.

Appreciation Award Winners Announced!

July 20, 2017, 11:30 a.m. PDT by Liz Treadwell

We are proud to announce the Appreciation Award winners of the Air Flow Challenge!

Although the judging panel was unable to determine any clear winners for the $3,000 prize, the Emerson team is pleased with the responses and quality of submissions received. Thus, they have decided to award the two competitors with proposals that were closest to meeting the judging criteria:

  • Sound Enabled Airflow System submitted by JK
  • Processing Air Flow Flux By Digital Input submitted by Navid Farjad

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the innovators who entered the challenge. While only two are receiving the Appreciation Awards, there were so many other insightful proposed solutions that we are confident many of the participants will do great things in the future relating to airflow measurements. Thank you all for helping make this challenge a success.

We would also like to thank all our supporters, partners, commenters and anyone else who in any way contributed to our challenge community. Without you, we would not have had the competition that we did.

Warm Regards,

Rajan Rajendran
