Crisis Trends: Visualizing teen crisis data for researchers

Every day, thousands of teens struggle with bullying, abuse, and family conflicts. Many of these teenagers face depression, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide.

Crisis Text Line offers free, 24/7 text support to teens nationwide. Since August 2013, Teens have already exchanged over 3 million messages with Crisis Text Line’s trained specialists.

On August 18th, Crisis Text Line will launch Crisis Trends, which will visualize a year’s worth of data of this largest crisis texting service for teens.

Crisis Trends will provide the ability to identify trends in how teens experience crisis over a period of time and breaks down their crisis analysis by state. With each day, Crisis Text Line develops a better sense of the factors that surround teen crises which is key to addressing those crises holistically.

This means Crisis Trends will be able to answer questions like:

What are the top crises for teens in Montana?
In what states is depression most common for teens?
For teens experiencing thoughts of suicide, what other crises do they face?

Crisis Trends’ goal is to help researchers, policy makers, and citizens understand the crises American teens face, and how to prevent future crises from happening. Currently they are collaborating with researchers like Adam Kaplin, MD, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Arvind Narayanan, PhD, and Karthik Dinakar of the MIT Media Lab to turn this data into better outcomes for teens in crisis.

Spread the word and help Crisis Trends continue to collaborate with problem solvers who can help find solutions for teens in crisis. And stay tuned for their official launch on August 18th.
