Dr. Eduardo I. Ortiz-Rivera is Tenure-Full-Professor at University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the areas of power electronics and control systems. His research interests include power electronics, unmanned vehicles, renewable energy applications, power systems, engineering education, robotics, aerospace systems, and nonlinear modeling for dynamic systems. He also leads his research group Mathematical Modeling and Control of Renewable Energy for the Advance in the Technology and Education (Minds2CREATE Research Team). He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications including referenced conference papers and IEEE transactions. Several of his peer-reviewed publications have been done with his undergraduate research assistants and graduate students that belong to the Minds2CREATE Research Team. Members of his group Minds2CREATE Research Team have won awards including 10 PhD, 7 GEM Fellows, 7 NSF-GRFP Awardees, 1 NASA-PR Space Grant Fellow, 1 UN Fellow and 2 Best IEEE Paper Awards. At UPRM, Dr. Ortiz-Rivera has served as researcher for NSF ERC for Center of Power Electronics Systems (CPES), Director of Power Electronics and Renewable Energy Laboratory since 2008, former president for ECE Graduate Committee (member since 2006, president during 2012), coordinator for the UPRM’s Electrical Engineering New Doctoral Program (from 2012 to 2014), and member for the UPRM BEAMS Committee (from 2007 to 2008). He was the Chairman for the Educational Committee part of the PR Aerospace Industry Cluster. He has created several unique courses at UPR. These courses include INEL 6995: Analysis and Control of Photovoltaic Systems, INEL 5417: Power Electronics Applied to Renewable Energy, INEL 4417: Alternative Power Generation, and INEL4418: Power Electronics Laboratory. He has been research mentor for more than 100 undergraduate students on more than 50 different undergraduate research projects. He has graduated 1 Ph.D., 10 M.S. students, currently mentoring 5 M.S. and 2 Ph.D. students, and member of graduate committee of 10 M.S. students. He is the faculty advisor of the UPRM’s IEEE Future Energy Challenge Team. Dr. Ortiz-Rivera was named 2009-2010, 2013-14, 2018-19. Outstanding Professor in Electrical Engineering by the UPRM Engineering Faculty in 2011, and 2016 respectively. Also, he has received additional awards like the National GEM Fellowship (Doctoral and Master), Alfred Sloan Fellowship, and Michigan State Competitive Doctoral Engineering Fellowship. He has worked for Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing, China), Volgograd State Technical University (Volgograd, Russia), Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Batavia, Illinois), Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago, Illinois), Naval Research Laboratory (Washington DC), University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California), and LORD Electric Co. in the Transmission Lines Division (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Dr. Ortiz-Rivera is Senior Member of the IEEE Power Electronics, Power Systems, Control Systems, and Education Societies.
